For more than 150 years now, our nation has set aside time to remember and pay tribute to those who gave their lives protecting our nation. There are now more than 1.3 million names on that list, starting with those who fought in the Revolutionary War. Nearly half, however, were added during the Civil War, the conflict that serves as the foundation for what we now call Memorial Day.In World War I, it was a Kentuckian who was one of the first Americans to be killed, and another Kentuckian became that war’s second-to-last American survivor. We also were the native state of the first U.S. Armored Forces casualty after Pearl Harbor during World War II.Today, Kentucky continues to show its willingness to serve through such posts and programs as Fort Knox, Fort Campbell, our National Guard, and the Reserves. If you are a veteran or are still a member of the military, I want to thank you for all that you have done and continue to do. If you are a loved one or friend of someone who died while serving our country, please know their sacrifice truly made a world of difference.Pictured is Talia, my friend's daughter, planting flags at Zachary Taylor National Cemetery when she was three years old. ...
